these flamboyant lizards do so — -

0:16 - 0:18or appear romantic to woo a mate.

0:18 - 0:21But the mechanisms that allow
the color change -
0:21 - 0:23are just now coming into focus.

0:24 - 0:26Scientists recently discovered
that chameleons -
0:26 - 0:29rearrange a lattice-like
structure of skin cells -
0:29 - 0:31to rapidly change hues.

0:31 - 0:35In fact, these reptiles have two
layers of these cells. -
0:35 - 0:37The upper layer changes coloration

0:37 - 0:39by relaxing or exciting the skin

0:39 - 0:42and the lower layer reflects
infrared light, -
0:42 - 0:44likely keeping the chameleon cool

0:44 - 0:46under any circumstance.

0:46 - 0:49This combination and process
make chameleons unique -
0:49 - 0:52among their color-changing brethren,

0:52 - 0:54but looking at these spectacular animals,

0:54 - 0:57their distinctiveness hardly
comes as a surprise. -
